The places we come from shape us: our work, our perspectives, our values, even our aesthetics all reflect our points of origin. This month on Making It, inspired by Winona’s journey to her birthplace and namesake, Winona, MN, we’ll be exploring what home means to some of our customers, and how the places they’ve come from have shaped the projects they’ve brought to life on Squarespace.

Emma Steelman, a self-taught silversmith and the founder of E.S.CO Jewelry, shares how the natural world inspires her handmade jewelry.

“I am inspired and influenced by the nature surrounding my home. I love working with the studio windows open in the summer so I can hear the songs of the cicadas. A southern summer has the best sounds. After the cicadas have lived their lives, I collect them and use their beautiful colors and patterns as inspiration for my work. I love hiking on the trails near my house and taking in all the sights, scents, and sounds. The deer, the flowers, and the waterfalls. I find so much inspiration in these beautiful woods. I often fill my pockets with rocks, tree bark, and flowers. I fill my studio with these little items and I try to replicate their shapes and textures in my works. The jewelry industry can be so destructive to this beautiful world we live in. These sweet little creatures and sights that I love remind me to do no harm with my jewelry making. There are many ethical options for stones and metals that don’t negatively impact the environment. We can have both pretty jewelry and a happy planet. I am thankful for living somewhere that reminds me to stop and smell the flowers.”
