Webydo gives bloggers a new platform

Regardless if you are looking to post your first blog or looking for a professional service, there are multiple outlets to satisfy almost any need you could have. However, competition is good, and one more player on the scene is not a bad thing. Both Blogger and WordPress work well, and Squarespace is an up and coming service. Tumblr remains popular, though it seems to be mostly for a younger crowd these days.

On April 29 Webydo launched its brand new solution, which includes both free web sites, as well as hosted solutions. The launch announcement -- "Webydo is globally launching a free SaaS web design platform that revolutionizes professional web creation, providing graphic designers with total creative freedom and independence. The open beta launch, announced at TechCrunch Disrupt NYC today, allows professional designers to create and manage cross-platform websites without writing code and has already been used to create more than 50,000 websites during its closed beta testing phase".

The new service works much like Squarespace, allowing the customer to drag and drop to design a site. To get started you only need to enter a name and email address and then choose a password.

Once you have registered, you have three options to get started -- choose from an existing design, create a layout or start with a blank page and do it all yourself.

Once you have made the choice then you will arrive on a dashboard interface. This contains options for adding all sorts of  customizations, including images, widgets, video, text, flash and more. You can also add pages -- up to 15 if you have registered a free account.

Free Service

  • Webdyo Subdomain
  • 15 pages
  • Unlimited bandwidth
  • 1 GB of storage

$7.99 Hosted

  • Your own domain
  • Unlimited pages
  • Unlimited Bandwidth
  • 2 GB of storage

I have only briefly played with the free version of this new service, but there is a lot here and it is highly customizable. The price -- free or $7.99 -- is competitive and the features make it an immediate competitor in the market. It is still new, meaning there are two possible directions -- going out of business or success and added features. For now, I see this as a strong start in the market.
