Every detail counts when you’re launching or updating an online store. Even small changes and adjustments can shift performance — from ensuring accurate shipping rates, to helping shoppers find what they’re looking for and complete checkout without obstacles.

Whether you’re considering starting a new ecommerce store, or interested in optimizing an existing shop, find answers to a few of the most frequently asked commerce-related questions from our customers.

How can I organize products in my online store?

Adding tags, categories, and subcategories to product pages is a great step in organizing the items you sell in your online store. Tagging and categorizing products enables visitors to quickly find what they’re looking for, and browse related items while they’re on your site. While tags don’t display on store pages, adding categories to your products will create category navigation at the top of the Store Page. To add a tag or category, navigate to your Pages panel, select the Shop page, then select the specific product you’d like to edit. You can also reuse a category or tag across multiple products. Sites hosted on Squarespace 7.1 can also add subcategories to their online stores. When you create subcategories, Squarespace automatically generates filtered category pages and links them to related product category pages. In addition to making your site more navigable for customers, subcategories can also capture search volume for additional keywords related to the products you sell, and boost your rankings in SERPs.

How can I make shipping rates based on weight?

Enable weight-dependent shipping to calculate shipping costs based on a product’s weight and dimensions. This is a great way to ensure charges are accurate for items that may be similar in size, but vary in weight.

Can I create discounts for customers who purchase more than one product?

To discount purchases of multiple items, you can create a bundled product in your store and enable customers to select three different products, or more, using variants.

You can also create discount codes for Free Shipping and other promotions, and announce them to shoppers via an announcement bar, or by displaying the discount code in a custom checkout form.

Squarespace users on Commerce Advanced plans can create promotions that apply only when a customer reaches a certain cart size, and to limit the promotions to work for a specific product, or products, in their store.
